The Berbera Economic Forum (BEF) was founded in 2012 and revitalized in 2017 as an emerging platform entity formed by a group of Business Entrepreneurs from the Berbera region with the aim of collaboration in fostering local economic growth, nourish a thriving employment market and creating an attractive entrepreneurial outlook that enables the local community economic growth and expanded business opportunities.

The primary focus is to support businesses and entrepreneurs by providing capacity building and business support. Additionally, it involves identifying new business opportunities and needs while facilitating and attracting new businesses and investment opportunities for the City.

Economic Growth

The goal is to improve the enabling business environment, facilitate and support the establishment of the Free Trade Zone, and promote financial literacy and business technology development.

Coordination

The platform aims to promote economic development and cooperation among businesses, government, and civil society. It organizes regular coordination meetings and consultations while encouraging the development of green business plans.

Eligibility and Membership

Berbera economic forum is the emerging platform between public institutions, private sector companies, and civil society organizations to promote inclusive and sustainable local economic development in Berbera and Somaliland

Businesses

The membership of the Forum is open for privately owned businesses established or with presence of an office in Berbera.

Government institutions

Regional Government Line Ministries, the Berbera Local Government, Port Authority and Water Agency shall be observer members of the Forum.

Membership

Members are obliged to pay the annual membership fee to be determined annually by the Board of Directors.

Approval

The Board of Directors will admit new members after application has been submitted and will keep a register of names and addresses of the members

Local economic development is seen as the most important way of addressing unemployment, inflation, poverty, food insecurity, unreliable energy, an unskilled labor force, the severe impact of climate change, inadequate economic infrastructure, the attraction of local investment, unreliable livestock export market, the underutilization of the blue and agrarian economy, and primitive technology.  The local economic development strategy adheres that regional government institutions, local authorities, the private sector, labor unions, and civil society can play an active role in determining their own economic paths and solving economic, social, and environmental problems.
